DMZ is an abbreviation and means demilitarized zone. It consists of a land area 248 km long and 4 km wide and was established in 1953 when a ceasefire was concluded between North and South Korea. Formally, the countries are still at war with each other and the DMZ acts as a buffer zone. The border between the countries is in the middle of the zone.
